about

Metrosideros offers antique and vintage goods, with a clear-eyed view of the future.

The focus is on items that are useful, well-designed and enduring, often handcrafted using natural materials. While these originate from many places, everything is sourced and shared within Aotearoa NZ, reflecting a commitment to local consumption. Some items are restored, readying them for many more years of use.

Metrosideros embraces slow purchasing, inviting personal connection in order to buy, and putting time and reflection back into choosing the things that surround us.

Founded by post-growth economics advocate Jennifer Wilkins, Metrosideros is grounded in a simple idea: the 20th century was about growth — more production, more consumption — yet inequality and environmental damage worsened. In the 21st century we must focus on stewarding the world’s existing material abundance through reusing, repairing, restoring and restyling the things we’ve already produced.
